Gopalganj’s Muksudpur Upazila was shaken on Monday when the decomposed body of a young man, missing for over three months, was recovered from a pond in Bhakuri village. The deceased has been identified as Md. Touhidul Islam Molya, a resident of Latifpur village in Gobindpur Union.
According to police and family sources, Touhidul Islam went missing on 16 December last year. Despite exhaustive searches across the locality by family members, no trace of him was found. Growing increasingly worried, his father, Akhtar Ali Molla, subsequently lodged a General Diary (GD) and formal complaint with Muksudpur Police Station.
On Monday afternoon, local residents were clearing water hyacinths from a pond in Bhakuri when they noticed a submerged body. Their screams attracted a crowd, and the police were promptly informed. Officers from Muksudpur Police Station quickly arrived at the scene and retrieved the body.
Family members who came to the scene were able to identify Touhidul through his clothing and other personal markings, despite the advanced stage of decomposition. Following initial documentation, the body was sent to the 250-bed Gopalganj General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Muksudpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Abdullah Al Mamun, said:
“The young man had been missing for three months. Due to prolonged submersion, the body was severely decomposed. After family members confirmed the identification, we sent the body for autopsy. Whether his death was the result of foul play or other causes will only be determined after the post-mortem report. Legal proceedings are currently underway.”
