Lionel Messi has described his final appearance for Argentina as one of the saddest days of his illustrious football career, admitting that the thought of never again representing his country will be particularly painful.
The emotional farewell came after Argentina defeated Benin 3–0, with Messi playing a starring role in what became a memorable night at the Monumental Stadium. The veteran playmaker scored and supplied two assists before addressing the supporters and reflecting on an international career that has spanned more than two decades.
Speaking in front of more than 85,000 spectators, Messi struggled to hide his emotions as he recalled some of the most significant moments of his journey with the national team.
He said he would never forget the first match Argentina played after their World Cup triumph. Even now, he watches footage from those matches and finds himself overwhelmed by emotion. For Messi, those memories represent much more than football results; they capture the bond he developed with the national team and its supporters.
The end of his international career closes one of the most remarkable chapters in modern football. Messi experienced considerable disappointment with Argentina earlier in his career, particularly after losing major finals. Yet those setbacks were eventually followed by a period of unprecedented success.
Argentina’s Copa América triumph in 2021 ended a long wait for a major international trophy and gave Messi his first senior title with the national side. A year later, he reached the summit of international football when Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Messi played a central role throughout that campaign and was named the tournament’s best player.
Those achievements changed the narrative surrounding his international career. The player who had once faced relentless scrutiny over his record with Argentina was now celebrated as the leader who had helped deliver the country’s most coveted trophies.
Yet, despite everything he has achieved, Messi made clear that leaving the national team is not something he welcomes.
“I don’t want to leave this place. I don’t want to leave football either,” he said, expressing his affection for the supporters and acknowledging that he would miss them greatly.
Messi also looked towards Argentina’s future. He pledged his support to the players who will take his place and represent the country in the years ahead. From outside the pitch, he said, he would continue to follow and encourage the national team.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also stressed the importance of unity, saying Argentina becomes considerably stronger when everyone stands together.
His words carried particular weight because the Monumental has long been one of the most emotionally charged venues in Argentine football. In front of a huge home crowd, Messi’s farewell became a moment of collective reflection on everything he has given to the national team.
For Messi, representing Argentina was never simply another professional obligation. He spoke with pride about being Argentine and about fulfilling the dream he had carried since childhood.
His final chapter with the national side therefore goes beyond goals, assists and trophies. It is a story of perseverance, heartbreak, redemption and ultimately triumph. After years of carrying the hopes of an entire footballing nation, Messi leaves behind a legacy that will remain inseparable from Argentina’s modern football history.
