Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, a distinguished physicist, has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU), one of Bangladesh’s premier academic institutions. He previously served as the Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, bringing extensive experience in higher education leadership to his new role.
The appointment was officially announced on Monday afternoon by Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, the Education Minister, during a press conference. At the event, the minister also revealed the appointments of Vice-Chancellors for six other public universities, signalling a major administrative reshuffle in Bangladesh’s higher education sector.
Dr. Milon highlighted the academic credentials and leadership experience of Professor Islam, emphasising that his expertise in physics and previous tenure at Bangladesh Open University make him well-suited to guide DU through its next phase of development.

His background in physics and prior experience as a university administrator are expected to contribute to advancing research, enhancing student engagement, and fostering international academic collaborations.
Education analysts note that such appointments are crucial not only for maintaining institutional stability but also for promoting innovation and competitiveness within Bangladesh’s tertiary education system. Professor Islam’s leadership is anticipated to play a pivotal role in guiding Dhaka University through strategic initiatives aimed at academic excellence, faculty development, and infrastructural growth.
