Police in Gazipur claim to have solved the mystery behind a gruesome murder after discovering a charred body in the Vrindavan area sixteen days ago. Investigators believe the killing stemmed from a failure to repay a substantial loan, after which the perpetrators attempted to destroy the body by setting it on fire.
In a press release issued on Monday night, Gazipur District Police announced the arrests of six individuals connected to the crime.
The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Atikur Rahman, son of Taijul Islam. Authorities allege that he and his family had taken a multi-lakh taka loan from a cooperative managed by one of the accused, Nazmul. When repayment was not made, tensions escalated, prompting Rahman to go into hiding.
According to police, the accused—Imran Hasan, Tutul Hasan, Nazmul, Kamal Hossain, Ruhanul Islam Ruhan, and Akbar—tracked him down to Mulaid village. There, Rahman was allegedly restrained at Nazmul’s residence before being suffocated to death.
Police state that the perpetrators placed Rahman’s body inside a jackfruit-leaf-wrapped sack and transported it to a secluded road in Vrindavan. Petrol was poured over the sack and ignited to conceal the victim’s identity. Local residents discovered the burnt body on 28 February, prompting an immediate police response. Advanced investigative techniques later led to the identification and arrest of the suspects, as well as confirmation of the victim’s identity.
Imran Hasan, identified as the primary suspect, has provided a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The case is now progressing through the legal system under the supervision of Mohammad Nasir Ahmed.
