A fatal road accident in Faridpur early on Wednesday morning has claimed the life of a local trader and left another man seriously injured, after a goods-laden pickup vehicle lost control and crashed into a roadside tree.
The deceased has been identified as Yusuf Ali Sheikh (46), a businessman reportedly engaged in the wholesale fruit trade. The injured, Atiar Sheikh, was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
According to police sources, the accident occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. along the busy Faridpur–Rajbari highway, in the Chandipur area. The pickup van, which was carrying a consignment of watermelons, had been travelling from Faridpur towards Khan Khanapur in Rajbari. Witnesses and initial investigations suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road before colliding violently with a tree.
The impact proved fatal for Yusuf Ali Sheikh, who died at the scene due to severe injuries sustained in the crash. Emergency responders later retrieved his body and sent it to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, Atiar Sheikh, who also sustained significant injuries, was given immediate medical attention after being transported to hospital.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the driver of the pickup fled the scene immediately following the accident, raising concerns about accountability and road safety compliance. Police have launched efforts to identify and apprehend the absconding driver.
Officer-in-Charge Salahuddin Chowdhury of Karimpur Highway Police Station stated that officers arrived promptly at the scene and brought the situation under control. He added that legal proceedings are currently underway, and further investigation will seek to determine the precise cause of the crash, including whether speeding, mechanical failure, or driver negligence played a role.
Road accidents remain a persistent concern on regional highways in Bangladesh, particularly during early morning hours when reduced visibility and fatigue can increase risks. Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy to prevent such tragic incidents.
