Four Leading Actresses Dominate Eid Cinema

With just two to three days remaining until Eid, anticipation for the festive film releases in Bangladesh is reaching its peak. The Bangladesh Film Certification Board has approved the screening of five major films: “Dhum” directed by Redwan Rony, “Rakshas” by Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, “Prince” by Abu Hayat Mahmud, “Pressure Cooker” by Raihan Rafi, and “Bonolota Express” directed by Tanim Noor. While discussions continue regarding the number of films being released and concerns over limited cinema halls, the central focus for audiences remains the actresses and their performances. The festival season promises a showcase of talent, with multiple prominent actresses vying for audience attention. Leading Actresses and Films Raihan Rafi, one of the most successful contemporary directors, brings “Pressure Cooker”, a heroine-centric story featuring four actresses: Shabnam Bubli, Nazifa Tushi, Maria Shanta, and Snigdha Chowdhury. Despite the ensemble, the narrative primarily centres on Bubli and Tushi. Speaking about the film, Tushi said: “The story of Pressure Cooker is unique. The teaser has given a glimpse of its narrative, which is unlike anything produced recently. A story focused on women is a bold undertaking, and I am proud to be part of it. I am not in competition with other actresses; my focus is on doing my best.” Bubli echoed this sentiment, adding that the film’s strength lies in its story, which she hopes audiences will enjoy as a special Eid gift from the director. Meanwhile, Redwan Rony’s “Dhum” has also generated buzz. Shot in Kazakhstan and various locations across Bangladesh, it stars Puja Cherry, who returns to the big screen after a hiatus. Cinema experts suggest the film could mark a pivotal comeback in her career. Puja Cherry herself described the project as a “rebirth” in her acting journey, praising the script and the challenges it presented. Eid’s festive lineup also includes “Prince”, featuring Tasnia Farin opposite Shakib Khan for the first time, alongside Indian actress Jyotirmoyee Kundu. Director Abu Hayat Mahmud’s cross-border casting adds an international flavour to the release. Farin stated that she eagerly awaits audience feedback on her performance. Another notable release is “Rakshas”, directed by Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, which pairs Siyam Ahmed with Indian actress Sushmita Chatterjee, marking the presence of two Indian actresses in this year’s Eid films. Finally, “Bonolota Express”, adapted from Humayun Ahmed’s novel Kichukhon, stars Sabila Noor in the role of Chitra, making her debut as a lead in a Humayun Ahmed adaptation. Sabila described the role as a major achievement and expressed confidence that audiences of all ages will appreciate the film.
