Gun Attack in Chittagong Injures BNP Leader

A violent shooting occurred at the residence of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman of Sarfobhata Union in Rangunia, Chittagong, leaving both the chairman and his elderly mother seriously injured. The victims, engineer Osman, aged 42, and his mother, Ayesha Begum, aged 70, were targeted in what police have described as a brazen attack by armed assailants.

The incident took place on Sunday, 22 March, at approximately 8:10 pm in the 2nd Ward of Sarfobhata Union, in the Gonjm Ali Sarkar area. Osman, a resident of this neighbourhood and a prominent local BNP leader, sustained gunshot wounds to his hands and abdomen, while his mother was shot in both legs as she attempted to shield her son.

Speaking to reporters, Osman’s father, Rashid Ahmed, said, “Four armed men entered the house suddenly and began firing indiscriminately. Osman was hit, and when his mother tried to protect him, she too was shot. Neighbours rushed them to the Upazila Health Complex for immediate treatment.”

Due to the severity of his injuries, Osman was subsequently transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced care. His mother continues to receive treatment locally. The shocking attack has spread panic among the residents of Sarfobhata and neighbouring areas.

South Rangunia police station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Hilal Uddin Ahmed, confirmed that police were promptly dispatched upon receiving news of the shooting. “Our forces are at the scene, securing the area, and a thorough search operation is underway to apprehend those responsible,” he stated.

Local sources indicated that Osman has long been an active political figure in the region, making him a prominent target. While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, police are investigating all possible angles, including political rivalry and local disputes.
