Dutt and Chowdhury Share Kolkata Stage

Two of the most influential cultural figures from Bengal’s film and artistic landscape—Anjan Dutt from India and Chanchal Chowdhury from Bangladesh—are set to appear together on the same stage in Kolkata on 18 April, marking a significant moment of cross-border cultural dialogue.

The event will take place as part of the third edition of the popular discussion series KCC Baithakkhana, organised by the Kolkata Centre for Creativity. The programme will be hosted at its dedicated premises in the Anandapur area of Kolkata, which has increasingly become a prominent hub for contemporary artistic exchange and interdisciplinary cultural programming.

According to the organisers, the session is designed to bring together voices from both sides of Bengal to reflect on the evolving landscape of cinema, theatre, and broader contemporary artistic practice. The central theme of the discussion will explore whether the long-standing divide between “art-house” and “commercial” cinema is gradually diminishing in the face of changing audience expectations and new storytelling platforms.

In recent years, the rapid expansion of digital streaming services, alongside the growing global visibility of regional content, has significantly altered how stories are produced, distributed, and consumed. Both established and emerging filmmakers are increasingly adapting to hybrid models of storytelling that blend artistic ambition with broader audience appeal. This shifting dynamic is expected to form a key part of the conversation between the two actors.

The discussion will be moderated by Chandril Bhattacharya, widely recognised as a lyricist, poet, and filmmaker. His presence is expected to add analytical depth and intellectual nuance to the session, guiding the dialogue towards broader reflections on culture, identity, and creative evolution.

Organisers have emphasised that the event is not merely a celebrity interaction but a structured cultural exchange aimed at strengthening artistic ties between India and Bangladesh. It is also intended to offer young creators, students of film, and cultural enthusiasts an opportunity to engage with experienced practitioners and gain insight into the changing grammar of visual storytelling.
