ABM Musa Voice of Courage

ABM Musa stands as one of the most distinguished figures in the history of Bangladeshi journalism—a fearless seeker of truth, an uncompromising commentator, and a lifelong advocate of press freedom. Through his pen and public engagement, he transformed journalism into a powerful instrument for accountability and human rights.

Born on 28 February 1931 in the respected village of Dharmapur in Chhagalnaiya, Feni, Musa grew up in a culturally rooted family environment that shaped his intellectual curiosity. He entered the world of journalism at the remarkably young age of 19 in 1950, beginning his career with a daily newspaper before soon joining an English-language publication, marking the start of a remarkable professional journey that would span over six decades.

Throughout his long and influential career, Musa served in multiple pivotal roles as journalist, editor, columnist, and media leader. His professional journey reflected not only personal excellence but also the evolution of journalism in the region. He held senior editorial responsibilities, led major national media institutions, and contributed significantly to the development of journalistic standards and training in Bangladesh.

His involvement in historic national movements further underscored his commitment to truth and justice. From the Language Movement of 1952 to the Liberation War of 1971, Musa remained actively engaged in documenting and communicating the realities of struggle and resistance. During the Liberation War, he played an important role in conveying frontline developments to international audiences through prominent global media platforms, helping the world understand the scale and significance of Bangladesh’s fight for independence.

After independence, at the invitation of the country’s founding leadership, he briefly entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1973. However, his enduring identity remained firmly rooted in journalism rather than political life. He consistently returned to writing, analysis, and public discourse, where his influence was most deeply felt.

Musa was also a key figure in Bangladesh’s journalistic community institutions, contributing to the strengthening of professional solidarity and ethical standards. His leadership helped guide the press through critical phases of national development and political transition.
