Ten Gold Bars Seized

A man has been arrested by the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) with ten gold bars, weighing over one kilogram and valued at approximately Tk 2.48 crore, in a major interception at the Darshana border area of Chuadanga.

The arrested individual has been identified as Alamgir Khan (55), a resident of Mobarakpara village in Darshana. The operation was conducted early on Monday (13 April) at around 6:00 a.m. near the Darshana Old Railway Station, following intelligence reports regarding an attempted gold smuggling operation along the border corridor.

According to a press release issued by the Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), a specialised patrol team was deployed in the area based on confidential information suggesting that a consignment of gold would be transported through the locality. Upon observing a suspicious individual moving towards the border zone, BGB personnel signalled him to stop. However, the suspect reportedly ignored the instruction and attempted to flee the scene, prompting a brief chase that ended in his immediate apprehension.

A subsequent search, conducted in the presence of local witnesses, led to the recovery of two packets concealed around his waist and wrapped in khaki-coloured adhesive tape. Upon inspection, the packets contained ten gold bars with a total weight of 1,166 grams. Authorities estimated the market value of the seized gold at approximately Tk 2,47,89,160. A mobile phone believed to have been used in connection with the smuggling attempt was also confiscated.

Officials stated that the recovered gold bars would be deposited with the local Treasury Office in accordance with standard procedure, while legal proceedings against the accused are being prepared at the relevant police station.

A senior official of the 6 BGB battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, confirmed the details of the seizure and reiterated the force’s commitment to preventing cross-border smuggling activities in the region. He added that intelligence-based operations and heightened surveillance along vulnerable border points continue to play a crucial role in curbing illicit trafficking networks.

Border regions such as Darshana have historically been sensitive corridors for smuggling due to their proximity to international boundaries and railway connectivity, making them frequent targets for organised trafficking attempts.
