Raphinha Denounces ‘Robbery’ Following Barcelona’s Champions League Exit

FC Barcelona’s journey in the UEFA Champions League came to a contentious conclusion at the Metropolitano Stadium as they were eliminated by Atlético Madrid. Despite a spirited performance in the second leg, the Catalan giants fell short on aggregate, prompting Brazilian winger Raphinha to level accusations of a “robbery” against the officiating standards.

Match Context and Aggregate Defeat

Barcelona entered the return leg facing a significant deficit after suffering a 2-0 defeat in the first leg. Raphinha, sidelined by injury for both encounters, watched from the stands as his teammates attempted a comeback. The match began promisingly for Hansi Flick’s side; goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres within the first 24 minutes levelled the aggregate score at 2-2.

However, the momentum shifted in the 31st minute when Atlético Madrid winger Ademola Lookman found the net. Barcelona’s task was further complicated in the 79th minute when defender Eric Garcia was shown a red card. Although Barcelona won the second leg 2-1, they were eliminated with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

Summary of the Quarter-Final Tie

Category First Leg Details Second Leg Details
Scoreline Atlético Madrid 2-0 Barcelona Barcelona 2-1 Atlético Madrid
Aggregate Score Atlético 3-2 Barcelona
Red Cards Pau Cubarsí (44′) Eric Garcia (79′)
Match Referee István Kovács Clément Turpin
Key Scorer(s) Not Specified Yamal, Torres (BAR); Lookman (ATL)

Allegations of Poor Officiating

Raphinha expressed profound dissatisfaction with the officiating in both fixtures. He directed specific criticism toward the second-leg referee, Clément Turpin, citing a failure to penalise Atlético’s fouls and ignoring a penalty claim following a challenge on Dani Olmo in the first half.

“The match was a complete robbery,” Raphinha told reporters. “The refereeing was riddled with issues. Some of his decisions were unbelievable. I do not know how many fouls Atlético committed, but he did not show the cards.”

The winger also referenced the first leg, refereed by István Kovács, where Pau Cubarsí was sent off in the 44th minute. Raphinha questioned why such errors occurred in consecutive matches, stating, “I truly want to understand why they are so afraid of a Barcelona victory. We played good football, but the win was simply snatched away from us.”

Official Appeals and Club Outlook

Barcelona had previously lodged a formal complaint with UEFA regarding the first leg, specifically citing the denial of a penalty and the failure to dismiss Atlético’s Marc Pubill. However, the governing body dismissed the appeal as “inadmissible” just prior to the second leg.

Despite the exit, manager Hansi Flick praised his team’s effort. Barcelona dominated possession and registered 15 shots, with eight on target. “Looking at both matches, we deserved the semi-final,” Flick remarked, while acknowledging the need to accept the result.

Barcelona’s focus now shifts to domestic competition. Having secured the Spanish Supercopa in January, the club currently holds a nine-point lead at the top of La Liga with seven matches remaining. Flick emphasised that clinching the league title remains the primary objective for the remainder of the season.
