The Bangladesh national cricket team’s head coach, Phil Simmons, has maintained a composed and professional stance regarding the rapid turnover within the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) leadership. During a press conference held today in Mirpur, ahead of the forthcoming ODI series against New Zealand, the 63-year-old West Indian coach addressed the administrative shifts with a sense of perspective gained from a long career in the sport.
Since Phil Simmons assumed his role in May 2024, the BCB has seen three different individuals at the helm of its presidency. This period of administrative instability began shortly after his appointment and has continued through to the current month.
| Effective Date | BCB President | Administrative Context |
| May 2024 | Faruque Ahmed | President at the time of Simmons’ hiring. |
| May 2024 | Aminul Islam | Appointed two weeks after Simmons’ arrival. |
| April 2026 | Tamim Iqbal | Appointed as Ad-hoc Committee President. |
The most recent transition occurred on 7 April 2026. Aminul Islam, who had served for ten months, saw his committee dissolved by the National Sports Council (NSC). By that afternoon, former captain Tamim Iqbal was appointed to lead the ad-hoc committee. This shift took place amidst a backdrop of public allegations and counter-allegations within the cricketing fraternity.
When questioned whether the frequency of these changes surprised him, Simmons responded with a smile, citing his life experiences as the foundation for his stoicism. He clarified that his lack of surprise was not specific to the environment in Bangladesh but rather a general outlook on life.
“Nothing in life surprises me anymore,” Simmons remarked. “It has nothing to do with Bangladesh; it is my realization about life. I have been through so many ups and downs that I know how much can happen every day. Therefore, I am not amazed by anything.”
Despite the administrative turbulence, Simmons asserted that the changes in the boardroom have not permeated the locker room or the training field. He emphasised that the coaching staff’s methodology and the players’ preparation for the New Zealand series remained unaffected.
According to Simmons, the coaching group has maintained its standard work routines, and the team’s preparations have proceeded exactly as planned. He noted that the players were in the midst of a preparation camp during the most recent leadership change and continued their duties without distraction.
“It did not make any difference in how we prepare the team for a series or the hard work we put in,” Simmons stated. “As a coaching group, it has not affected our way of working.” He further observed that he saw no mental impact on the squad, noting that the players have worked as hard as ever, with some even exceeding their usual efforts to ensure readiness for the upcoming matches.
The focus for the Bangladesh team now shifts to the field. The bilateral series against New Zealand is scheduled to commence this Friday. The tour consists of three One Day Internationals (ODIs) followed by a three-match T20 International series.
ODI Series Details:
Match 1 & 2: Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur.
Match 3: Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.
Start Time: All matches are scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM local time.
Following the conclusion of the ODI series, the two sides will compete in three T20 International matches to conclude the tour. Despite the initial focus of the press conference being on administrative matters, Simmons eventually requested the media to pivot back to cricket-specific queries as the team nears the opening fixture.
