Tehran Issues Fresh Warning to Washington

Iran has issued a firm warning to the United States regarding its role in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, following recent remarks by a senior Iranian military figure.

Mohsen Rezaei, who serves as a military adviser to Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, has stated that if the United States attempts to act as a “police force” in the Strait of Hormuz, American vessels operating in the area could be targeted and sunk. His comments were broadcast on Iranian state television.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint for global energy and trade flows, was central to the remarks. Rezaei’s statement referred to the possibility of the United States taking an enforcement or monitoring role in the waterway, a suggestion he strongly rejected.

According to the report, tensions escalated after a military incident on 28 February, when the United States and Israel reportedly conducted an attack in Iran. Following this event, Tehran is said to have halted maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The report also states that the United States has since imposed a naval blockade on shipping activity in the strait and Iranian ports.

In his televised comments, Rezaei directly criticised the idea of U.S. enforcement in the region, asking whether it was appropriate for Washington to assume such a role and questioning the legitimacy of a powerful military acting in that capacity.

He further warned that vessels involved in enforcing or monitoring the blockade could be exposed to military retaliation. According to his statement, such ships could be destroyed in an initial missile strike, reflecting the severity of the warning issued.

Rezaei is a senior Iranian figure with a long military background. He previously served as Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from 1981 to 1997 before retiring from active service. The report notes that he later returned to a formal advisory role after a period in retirement, and now serves within the advisory structure of Mojtaba Ali Khamenei.
