Truck Collision in Kamalganj: 350 Chickens Killed

A road traffic accident in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar has resulted in the death of around 350 chickens and injuries to two poultry suppliers after a livestock-laden truck collided with a stationary BRTC bus.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 am on Monday (20 April) near the Vanugach Choumuhoni area along the Shreemangal–Kamalganj road. According to police and local accounts, the truck was transporting 950 layer chickens from Sohail Mia’s Zidan Boiler House in Meghna Ghat, Bhairab of Kishoreganj district, en route to Beanibazar in Sylhet.

As the vehicle passed through Vanugach Bazar, the driver reportedly lost control. The truck subsequently crashed into the rear of a stationary Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus parked by the roadside. The impact was severe enough to cause the death of 350 chickens instantly, while many others were injured or distressed.

The financial loss has been estimated at around BDT 250,000 by the affected suppliers, although they fear the total damage may increase due to additional losses and alleged theft at the scene.

The injured individuals, identified as Mobarak Hossain (37) and Sani Ahmed (26), are poultry distributors from the Chandibeth South Para area of Bhairab upazila. They were given primary medical treatment locally. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Mobarak Hossain claimed that immediately after the crash, several local individuals allegedly took away a number of surviving chickens from the vehicle, further increasing the financial losses suffered by the traders.

Following the incident, a police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Al Amin visited the scene to assess the situation and begin preliminary investigations. Authorities have confirmed that legal procedures are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether negligence or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.

The accident has once again raised concerns over road safety on regional highways, particularly involving overloaded transport vehicles and roadside parking of large buses in non-designated areas.
