Defying Strait Ban: IRGC Attacks Cargo Ship off Oman

An incident has been reported off the coast of Oman in which a container ship was targeted by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), resulting in significant damage to the vessel’s bridge, according to maritime monitoring authorities.

The agency reported that an IRGC vessel approached the ship before gunfire was directed from a patrol craft, striking the bridge area and causing serious damage to the vessel’s control infrastructure.

The bridge of a ship serves as its primary command centre, where navigation and operational decisions are made. Damage to this section can severely affect steering, communication, and overall vessel control.

Separately, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency (Tasnim News Agency) reported that Iranian military forces acted after repeated warnings allegedly went unheeded by the vessel. According to the agency, the ship did not respond to instructions issued prior to the engagement, and action was taken under what it described as maritime law procedures.

The reported location of the incident is within proximity of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically significant waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. This route is widely used for international shipping, particularly for energy and commercial cargo transit.

The IRGC has also reportedly stated in recent announcements that restrictions would remain in place around its maritime operations until sanctions on Iranian ports imposed by the United States are lifted. It has further warned that vessels attempting to transit the area under such conditions may be subject to interception.
