A woman has been arrested in connection with the brutal killing of her mother-in-law, whose body was allegedly concealed in a sack after being hacked to death in the Bejpara area of Jessore city.
The deceased, Sakina Begum, wife of Lal Chand Khalifa of Bejpara, was reportedly attacked with a sharp weapon inside her residence. Police said her daughter-in-law, Mariam Khatun, is accused of carrying out the killing and attempting to hide the body in a sack placed near the front of the house.
According to law enforcement officials, Mariam Khatun was detained at the scene along with a blood-stained machete believed to have been used in the attack. The incident came to light late on Tuesday night when the victim’s son, Shahidul Islam, discovered the concealed body after returning home.
Police and family members confirmed that Shahidul Islam had left for work in the morning. Before leaving, he reportedly inquired about food preparation at home and was told by his wife that no meal had been cooked, advising him to eat outside. At that time, he was also informed that his mother had gone out. However, upon returning home around 10 pm, he again asked about his mother’s whereabouts and was told she had not yet returned.
Growing suspicious, Shahidul Islam later informed the police. Around midnight, he and his sister Shahida Begum reportedly found a sack in front of the residence, inside which Sakina Begum’s body was discovered. Police were subsequently called to the scene and recovered the body.
Additional Superintendent of Police Abul Bashar stated that the killing appears to have stemmed from a trivial domestic dispute. He confirmed that Mariam Khatun has been detained and, during preliminary questioning, she allegedly admitted involvement in the incident. A formal murder case is currently being processed, and the body has been sent to Jessore General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
