A leader of the Jubo Mahila League, Shilpi Begum, who had been arrested in connection with a case filed under the Explosives Act at Tejgaon Police Station, has been released on bail.
She was freed on Wednesday (22 April) at around 12 noon from Kashimpur Central Jail. The information was confirmed by Shirin Akhter, Deputy Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Women’s Central Prison.
Earlier, on Tuesday (21 April) at approximately 8 pm, a Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court, presided over by Judge Mostafizur Rahman, approved her bail petition, paving the way for her release.
According to individuals present at the jail gate, Shilpi Begum was received by local political associates following her release. Among them was Alamgir Hossain, a labour wing leader from the Tejgaon area, who described her as a senior figure within their local political circle. He stated that they had been engaged in political activities together and expressed the view that the court granted bail after considering humanitarian grounds, particularly in light of media attention surrounding the case. He also emphasised respect for the legal process.
Upon leaving the prison premises, Shilpi Begum spoke briefly to the media, alleging that she had been “handed over through mob mobilisation” and claimed that police had not initially sought to arrest her directly. She further alleged involvement of opposition political activists in her arrest. She clarified that although she is affiliated with the Awami League, she does not hold any formal party position. She expressed gratitude to the court and journalists following her release.
