A protest rally and demonstration were held by the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (ChakSU) at the university campus, condemning the alleged attack on Dhaka University Students’ Union (DUCSU) leaders A B Jubayer and Musaddiq Ali Ibn Mohammad in Shahbagh, Dhaka. The demonstration also included condemnation of reported assaults on journalists working at Dhaka University.
The programme took place on Thursday night at around 11:30 pm at the university’s Gol Chattar (Round Circle). Following the gathering, students and ChakSU representatives organised a protest procession that began at Gol Chattar and moved through Sufia Kamal Hall, Alawal Hall, and the security office before returning to its starting point.
During the procession, ChakSU leaders reportedly raised slogans against the Chhatra Dal, alleging its involvement in the incidents. A brief rally was later held at Gol Chattar, where student representatives delivered speeches criticising what they described as ongoing patterns of campus violence and intimidation.
According to ChakSU leaders, the incident in Shahbagh involved an attack on DUCSU representatives while they were attempting to assist an allegedly isolated student. They also claimed that journalists present at the scene were similarly subjected to violence. The speakers further referred to previous incidents at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) and other educational institutions, alleging a broader pattern of unrest linked to student politics.
ChakSU General Secretary Sayeed bin Habib stated that elected student representatives were attacked when they intervened in what he described as a volatile situation. He also alleged that external groups were being brought into campuses to create conflict, and referred to incidents at Chattogram City College as examples of escalating tensions.
ChakSU Vice President Md Ibrahim expressed concern that political violence on campus had not ended as expected after recent political changes in the country. He called for accountability and judicial action regarding the incidents.
Other speakers at the rally included ChakSU officials responsible for literature and culture, office administration, career development and international affairs, liberation war and democratic movements, as well as science and information technology portfolios.
