The sequence of events began with the removal of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League. In response, directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) held an online meeting on the same day and agreed to seek clarification from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the circumstances surrounding the decision.

However, before any formal diplomatic or administrative process could be initiated, Asif Nazrul allegedly posted on social media on 3 January, stating that, due to security concerns, Bangladesh should not travel to India for the T20 World Cup.
