In Bangladesh cricket circles, a heated controversy has emerged following a widely circulated Facebook post attributed to Asif Nazrul, the former youth and sports adviser in the interim government. According to multiple associated accounts, that post is now being viewed by some stakeholders as a pivotal moment that escalated an already sensitive dispute and, ultimately, contributed to Bangladesh’s failure to secure participation in a major World Cup tournament.
The sequence of events began with the removal of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League. In response, directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) held an online meeting on the same day and agreed to seek clarification from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the circumstances surrounding the decision.
However, before any formal diplomatic or administrative process could be initiated, Asif Nazrul allegedly posted on social media on 3 January, stating that, due to security concerns, Bangladesh should not travel to India for the T20 World Cup. Reports suggest that this public declaration significantly complicated ongoing discussions, effectively narrowing the scope for behind-the-scenes negotiation.
Subsequently, on 13 January, he is said to have communicated a firm position to the BCB, reinforcing his stance against Bangladesh’s participation in India. Despite this, the situation remained fluid until 22 January, when he reportedly met national team cricketers at a five-star hotel and reiterated arguments against travelling, even though a prior decision had already been conveyed to the board.
Meanwhile, a letter signed by Mahbub-ul Alam, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, clarified that government support would only be extended if matches were played outside India. This placed the BCB in a difficult position, prompting them to propose Sri Lanka as an alternative venue. The proposal, however, failed to gain traction internationally.
Ultimately, Bangladesh could not secure sufficient backing within the ICC framework. A vote within the council led to Bangladesh being excluded from the tournament, marking the first time the national side had missed a World Cup through such a decision.
