A 50-year-old mobile recharge (flexiload) businessman was violently attacked and robbed of nearly two lakh taka in the Demra area of the capital, in what appears to have been a targeted late-night assault.
The victim, identified as Abul Kalam (50), was returning home on Thursday night (23 April) after closing his shop when the incident occurred near the southern side of the Foodplex Barak Mansion alley in Konapara. The attack reportedly took place around 12:30 a.m.
According to family members, Abul Kalam operates a flexiload and telecommunications outlet named “Bonna Telecom” at the Konapara bus stand area. As part of his routine, he closed his shop at night and was carrying the day’s earnings—approximately 200,000 taka—in a bag while walking home.
His son, Al Amin Abran, stated that his father was attacked just as he reached the gate of their residence. A group of unidentified assailants approached from behind and struck him with sharp weapons. He sustained serious injuries to his head, right ear, and face, causing him to collapse on the spot and lose consciousness.
Before nearby residents could respond to his cries for help, the attackers fled with the cash-filled bag. Locals later rescued the injured man and initially took him to a nearby medical facility. As his condition required more advanced treatment, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:45 a.m.
Following emergency treatment at the hospital, he was later brought back home. Medical officials confirmed that he had received primary care for his injuries.
A police official at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital camp confirmed that Abul Kalam received treatment in the emergency department. He also noted that the victim is originally from Matlab North in Chandpur district and currently resides with his family in a rented house in Konapara, Demra.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over street crime and the safety of small business owners who often carry daily earnings in cash during late-night hours.
