Group Detained in Satkania for Attempted Extortion and Blackmail

SATKANIA — A coordinated extortion attempt involving a fraudulent blackmail scheme was thwarted by local residents in the Satkania Upazila of Chittagong on Friday, 24 April 2026. Four individuals, including one woman, were intercepted and subsequently handed over to the police after allegedly attempting to extort 200,000 Bangladeshi Taka from a local practitioner through the use of fabricated compromising video footage.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 pm in the Master Para area of Ward No. 2, within the Keochia Union. Following a confrontation with the local community, the suspects were rescued from a public disturbance by a dispatched team from the Satkania Police Station and are currently being held in judicial custody.

Execution of the Extortion Scheme

The victim, identified as Sajal Kanti Das (locally known as Sajal Baidya), a traditional herbalist and practitioner, provided a detailed account of the encounter. According to Mr Das, the operation commenced when an unidentified woman entered his private chamber under false pretences. Once inside, she reportedly initiated sudden physical contact, embracing him unexpectedly while a concealed camera hidden within her bag recorded the interaction.

Immediately following this staged event, three men entered the room. One of the individuals, identified as Nurul Abchar, presented himself as a professional journalist. The group then confronted Mr Das with the captured footage and demanded a payment of 200,000 BDT. They allegedly threatened to publish the material and disseminate reports that would cause significant reputational damage if the financial demands were not met.

In his statement, Mr Das admitted that out of concern for his social standing, he initially offered a settlement of 50,000 BDT. However, the suspects refused the offer, insisting on the full sum of 200,000 BDT.

Community Intervention and Apprehension

The prolonged negotiation and the suspicious behaviour of the outsiders attracted the attention of Mr Das’s family members and neighbours. Upon intervening and questioning the group, the residents became convinced that the individuals were members of an organised criminal gang specialising in “honey-trap” style fraud.

The situation escalated as an incensed crowd gathered, leading to a physical altercation described as “mass beating” before the authorities could arrive. The suspects were eventually secured by the local community and delivered to the responding police officers.

The four accused individuals have been identified as:

  • Nurul Abchar (who claimed to be a journalist)

  • Yasmin Akter

  • Jahangir Alam

  • Zainal Uddin

Investigative reports suggest that the suspects are residents of the neighbouring Banshkhali, Patiya, and Anwara Upazilas. They are believed to be part of a structured syndicate that targets individuals in rural areas using similar tactics of impersonation and digital blackmail.

Official Police Response and Legal Standing

Manjurul Haque, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkania Police Station, confirmed the detention of the four suspects. He stated that the police intervened to rescue the individuals from the local residents and took them into protective and investigative custody.

“Upon receiving information regarding the disturbance, a police team was dispatched to the Master Para area. We have moved the four accused to the station for their safety and for formal questioning. We are currently awaiting a formal written complaint from the victim, Sajal Kanti Das. Once the complaint is registered, we will proceed with a thorough investigation and take the necessary legal actions against the perpetrators,” OC Haque remarked.

As of the evening of 24 April 2026, the suspects remain under interrogation. Local authorities have cautioned residents to remain vigilant against such fraudulent schemes and have urged the public to refrain from vigilante justice, advising instead that suspected criminals should be reported immediately to law enforcement. The equipment used by the group, including the concealed camera and purported journalistic credentials, is expected to be seized as evidence in the forthcoming criminal proceedings.
