Seven-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Manikganj Pond

A seven-year-old boy named Al Rafi died by drowning in a pond in the Ghior upazila of Manikganj district on Saturday, 25 April. The incident occurred in Bir Singjuri village during the afternoon hours. The deceased was identified as the son of Lutfar Rahman, an expatriate worker residing abroad.

Details of the Incident

According to local sources and family members, the incident took place while Al Rafi was accompanying his mother, Papi Akter, to a pond adjacent to their residence for a bath. While his mother was occupied, the child slipped into the water unnoticed and subsequently drowned.

Upon noticing his absence, Papi Akter initially assumed that her son had returned to their house alone. However, after finishing her bath and returning home, she discovered that the boy was not there. Alarmed by his disappearance, she returned to the pond to conduct a search. During the search, she discovered the child’s submerged, motionless body after her foot came into contact with him in the water.

Medical Response and Official Statement

With the assistance of relatives and neighbours, Al Rafi was immediately recovered from the pond and transported to the Ghior Upazila Health Complex. Upon arrival, the duty medical officer conducted an examination and pronounced the child dead. Medical staff confirmed that the victim had ceased breathing prior to reaching the facility.

Mir Mahabubur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ghior Police Station, confirmed the fatality to the media. He stated that the police department received notification regarding the drowning and promptly dispatched a team to the site to investigate the circumstances. Contextual Information on Drowning in Bangladesh

Drowning remains a significant public health concern in rural Bangladesh, particularly for children under the age of ten. According to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and international health organisations, drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury and death among children in the country.

Geographically, the Ghior upazila is part of the Manikganj district, which is characterised by numerous water bodies, including ponds, canals, and rivers. This environmental landscape increases the risk of water-related accidents during the summer and monsoon seasons. Authorities frequently advise parents and guardians to maintain constant supervision of young children near open water sources to prevent such tragedies. In this specific case, the local administration is expected to complete the formal inquiry into the accidental death following the standard protocols established by the Manikganj district police.
