In Jamalpur’s Melandah Upazila, three members of the same family—a mother and her two daughters—were killed when a tree fell onto their residence during a storm associated with the Bengali month of Boishakh. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at around 3:30 a.m. in the Daghi area of Noayanagar Union.
The deaths were confirmed on Monday morning by Melandah Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jinnatul Ara.
According to local residents and Fire Service sources, the victims had been sleeping on the same bed inside their home when the accident took place. A large mahogany tree located adjacent to the house collapsed due to strong winds and struck the dwelling directly. The force of the impact caused the tree to crash onto the room where the family was sleeping, trapping them beneath the debris. All three died at the scene.
The deceased were identified as Khuki Begum (65), widow of the late Goni Mandal, and her two daughters, Farida Akhter (40) and Fote Akhter (37), all residents of Daghi village in Noayanagar Union.
Local people reported that although the incident occurred during the night, the bodies were only recovered in the morning with assistance from residents. Fire Service personnel and police later arrived at the scene and participated in the recovery operation, removing the tree and retrieving the bodies from the collapsed structure.
| Name | Age | Relation to Head of Family | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khuki Begum | 65 | Mother | Daghi, Noayanagar Union |
| Farida Akhter | 40 | Daughter | Daghi, Noayanagar Union |
| Fote Akhter | 37 | Daughter | Daghi, Noayanagar Union |
The incident took place amid adverse weather conditions linked to seasonal storms typical during Boishakh, when sudden squalls and strong winds are not uncommon in parts of Bangladesh. Such weather events can occasionally lead to structural damage, particularly where large trees are situated close to residential buildings.
Authorities have not reported further details regarding damage to surrounding properties. The focus of the response remained on the recovery of the victims and clearing the fallen tree from the site.
