Police in the Keshabpur Upazila of Jessore have detained a woman on suspicion of murdering her elderly mother during a domestic visit. The incident, which has caused significant distress in the local community, occurred in the Sahapara area of Keshabpur municipality during the late hours of Monday, 27 April.
The victim has been identified as Gouri Rani Adhikari, aged 75, the widow of the late Kalipada Adhikari and a resident of the Sahapara neighbourhood. According to local sources, her daughter, Dipti Adhikari, aged 50, had arrived at the parental home several days prior to the incident for a visit.
The matter came to light on Tuesday morning when Dipti’s brother-in-law, Pabitra Adhikari, arrived at the residence to escort her back to her own home. Upon entering the first floor of the property, he discovered the lifeless body of Gouri Rani Adhikari. He subsequently located Dipti Adhikari in the bathroom in an undressed state and a disoriented condition.
Initial observations suggest that the assault took place late Monday night. It is alleged that Dipti Adhikari struck her mother repeatedly using the wooden handle of a traditional vegetable cutter (known locally as a Boti). Forensic evidence found at the scene indicated that the victim sustained severe blunt-force trauma to her forehead and the back of her head.
The resulting haemorrhaging from these injuries is believed to have caused Gouri Rani Adhikari’s death at the scene. Investigators recovered the broken wooden handle of the implement adjacent to the deceased.
Following the discovery, the Keshabpur Police were notified and arrived promptly to secure the scene. Inspector (Investigation) Shahidul Islam of Keshabpur Police Station confirmed that the body has been recovered and sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The primary suspect, Dipti Adhikari, was taken into custody without resistance. Preliminary police assessments and statements from family members suggest that the accused suffers from significant mental health issues. Authorities have indicated that she is “mentally unstable,” a factor that will be central to the ongoing legal proceedings.
