Babar Azam, the captain of Peshawar Zalmi, has reinforced his standing in the annals of T20 cricket following a dominant performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Qualifier. Facing Islamabad United in Karachi, Azam struck a commanding 103 runs off just 59 deliveries. This contribution was instrumental in securing a 70-run victory for his side, propelling Peshawar Zalmi into the PSL final and earning Azam the Player of the Match award.
This latest century has seen Babar Azam equal a significant record previously held by Indian internationals Virat Kohli and Abhishek Sharma. Until this match, Kohli and Sharma shared the record for the highest number of T20 centuries scored within a single country, having each recorded eight hundreds on Indian soil. By reaching his eighth T20 century in Pakistan, Babar now stands alongside them at the top of this particular statistical category.
Beyond regional achievements, Babar has established a new global benchmark for leadership in the shortest format of the game. He now holds the record for the most T20 centuries scored while serving as captain.
Prior to the match in Karachi, he was tied with South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, both having scored eight centuries as captain. With this ninth hundred in a leadership role, Babar has surpassed du Plessis to take sole possession of the record. This innings also brought Babar’s total career T20 century count to 13, further solidifying his position as one of the most prolific centurions in the history of the format.
Within the context of the Pakistan Super League, Babar has equalled the record for the most centuries in the tournament’s history. He now shares this milestone with Usman Khan, both having achieved four PSL hundreds. However, a disparity in efficiency exists: while Usman Khan reached this figure in only 35 innings, Babar has required 108 innings.
In the current PSL season, Babar’s form has been exceptionally consistent. Over the course of 10 innings, he has accumulated 588 runs, including two centuries. This tally matches the record for the most runs in a single PSL season, previously set by Fakhar Zaman in 2022, who scored 588 runs in 13 innings. As Peshawar Zalmi has advanced to the final, Babar remains in a position to surpass this record and set a new seasonal high.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Babar Azam expressed confidence in his current technical state. He noted that he feels he is returning to his “best rhythm,” attributing his success to a simplified approach and self-belief. He emphasised the importance of tactical execution, stating that he focuses on assessing the requirements of the pitch, identifying how to manage specific bowlers, and determining the appropriate moments to increase aggression.
With the PSL final approaching, Babar Azam’s resurgence in form presents a significant statistical and tactical narrative for the conclusion of the tournament.
