Fatal Collision in Kurigram Claims Five Lives of Returning Medical Patients

The death toll following a devastating head-on collision between a stone-laden lorry and a microbus in Kurigram’s Nageshwari has risen to five. The victims, who included a father and his young daughter, were returning home from Rangpur after seeking medical treatment when the incident occurred. The arrival of the bodies in their native villages in Bhurungamari Upazila on Wednesday has left the local community in a state of profound mourning.

The accident took place at approximately 23:30 on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, in the Basherhat area under the jurisdiction of the Nageshwari Municipality. According to local reports and emergency services, the microbus was transporting a group of residents from Bhurungamari who had travelled to Rangpur earlier that morning for various medical consultations.

Details of the Deceased and Casualties

The deceased have been identified as residents of Bhurungamari Upazila. They include:

• Shamim Hossain (32), a resident of the Asad Moar area.

• Sadia Akhtar (8), the daughter of Shamim Hossain.

• Tamanna Akhtar (28), the wife of Babu Miah from the same family.

• Nurnabi Miah (28), the son of Zahidul Islam.

• Limon Miah (28), the driver of the microbus and son of Saifur Rahman from Dholdanga village.

In addition to the fatalities, nine other passengers sustained injuries, several of whom remain in a critical condition. The injured individuals have been identified as Hamidul Islam (25), Shanta, Somer Ali (60), Joba (35), Babu Miah (42), Monir Miah (45), Moon Miah (10), Shiuli Begum (40), and Siam Miah (35). The casualties are currently receiving treatment at Kurigram General Hospital and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Sequence of Events and Emergency Response

The collision occurred as the microbus was navigating the Basherhat stretch of the highway. A lorry transported a cargo of stones from the opposite direction struck the passenger vehicle with significant force. On-site witnesses reported that three individuals died instantly due to the impact. The remaining two victims succumbed to their injuries while being transported to Rangpur for emergency specialised care.

By Wednesday afternoon, 29 April, the remains of the five victims were delivered to their respective family homes. The sight of the coffins, particularly those of the father and daughter, Shamim and Sadia, resulted in emotional scenes as hundreds of villagers gathered to pay their final respects. Mr Korban Ali Babu, a member of Ward 4 of the Shilkhuri Union Parishad, confirmed that the entire village is in a state of shock, noting that the severity of the injuries amongst the survivors remains a significant concern for the community.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

The law enforcement response has been coordinated between the Bhurungamari and Nageshwari police stations. Azim Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhurungamari Police Station, stated that whilst his office was alerted to the deaths of the local residents, the primary investigation and legal proceedings fall under the jurisdiction of the Nageshwari Police.

Abdullah Hil Zaman, the Officer-in-Charge of Nageshwari Police Station, confirmed that the lorry involved in the fatal crash has been seized by the authorities. However, the driver of the heavy vehicle managed to flee the scene immediately following the collision and remains at large. Police have initiated a formal case and are conducting raids to apprehend the fugitive driver. The vehicles involved have been recovered from the highway to ensure the resumption of normal traffic flow, and further forensic examinations are expected to determine the exact cause of the mechanical impact.
