A man has been arrested and subsequently sent to prison following allegations of persistent sexual harassment and indecent exposure targeting female students in Mymensingh city. The suspect, identified as Mahmudul Hasan, 45, was produced before a court on Thursday, 30 April 2026, which ordered his detention in judicial custody.
The individual is the son of Mozammel Haque Pramanik, hailing from Ajugara Dakshinpara village in the Belkuchi Upazila of Sirajganj district. At the time of his apprehension, he was employed as a sales assistant at a textile retail outlet in the Choto Bazar area of Mymensingh.
The investigation revealed that for approximately the past six months, Mahmudul Hasan had established a disturbing pattern of behaviour. He would reportedly position himself outside a private secondary school in the Natun Bazar area during the early morning hours. As female students arrived for their morning classes, he would engage in lewd gestures and obscene conduct intended to harass and intimidate the minors.
The matter escalated on the morning of Thursday, 23 April 2026, when he targeted two specific students. This particular incident was captured in its entirety by the school’s Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance system. Upon witnessing the footage and the immediate distress of the students, the school administration managed to detain the individual on-site.
However, in a contentious initial resolution, the suspect was released after his employer intervened. Following the provision of a written undertaking (a muchleka) promising that such behaviour would not be repeated, he was allowed to leave the premises without immediate police involvement.
The situation gained significant public attention when the CCTV footage of the indecent act was leaked and subsequently went viral on social media platforms, including Facebook, on Tuesday. The dissemination of the video sparked widespread outrage among the local community and intensified the anxieties of parents regarding the safety of their children in the vicinity of educational institutions.
Recognising the gravity of the public reaction and the criminal nature of the documented acts, the District Detective Branch (DB) of the police initiated an investigation. Utilising advanced technological tracking and mobile network forensics, the authorities located the suspect in the Enayetpur area of Sirajganj, where he had reportedly fled after the video became public.
The Detective Branch successfully apprehended him and transported him back to Mymensingh to face formal charges.
Abdullah Al Mamun, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) for Mymensingh, confirmed the arrest and the subsequent legal proceedings. He stated that a formal case has been registered under Section 10 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000, which specifically addresses sexual oppression and indecent assaults.
“The suspect was tracked using digital surveillance and taken into custody from Sirajganj. Following a preliminary interrogation, he was presented before the court, which directed that he be sent to jail pending further investigation,” the Additional SP remarked.
The school authorities and local residents have expressed their relief at the arrest but have called for heightened police presence around educational zones during the early morning and afternoon hours. The police administration has assured the public that they are monitoring the safety of students and will take strict action against any individual found compromising the security of academic environments. The case continues as the prosecution prepares the evidence for the formal trial.
