A man has died following a violent incident involving rival armed groups at a Rohingya refugee settlement in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
The incident occurred at around 7:00 pm on Friday at the Leda refugee camp (Camp-26) in Teknaf upazila. The deceased was identified as Nur Hasan (32), a Rohingya man known locally within the camp as “Bainna Dokait”. He resided in Block C-2 of the Leda camp. Police sources and Rohingya community leaders stated that he had multiple criminal cases filed against him at Teknaf Police Station, including charges related to murder and robbery.
According to accounts provided by police and camp representatives, the violence was preceded by a gunfight between two armed Rohingya groups in the hilly areas surrounding the camp. Nur Hasan was reportedly affiliated with one of these groups. Following the exchange of gunfire, he was moving between two hill locations in the evening when members of a rival group allegedly identified and detained him.
He was then subjected to a beating by members of the opposing group. Around 8:30 pm, several camp residents transported him in a critically injured condition to an International Organization for Migration (IOM)-run medical facility within the camp. After receiving initial treatment, he was referred to the Ukhia Upazila Health Complex for further care. He was pronounced dead at approximately 9:30 pm while undergoing treatment.
Police have stated that the incident stemmed from longstanding enmity between rival groups operating within the camp area. Following the death, additional police patrols were deployed in and around the camp to maintain order and prevent further escalation. Authorities also confirmed that the body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Legal procedures in connection with the case are currently underway.
