Eight Killed in Sylhet Collision

Eight people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van in Sylhet on Sunday morning, according to local police.

The accident took place at around 6:00 am in the Talibazar area of South Surma, Sylhet. All those killed were construction workers travelling in the pickup van, although their identities had not been immediately confirmed at the time of reporting.

Officer-in-Charge of South Surma Police Station, Md Ashraful, told local media that the workers were travelling from Sylhet towards Sunamganj in the pickup van. The truck involved in the crash was carrying jackfruit and had been travelling towards Sylhet from Chattogram.

Police said the collision was head-on, resulting in multiple fatalities at the scene. Emergency responders and law enforcement officials attended the location following the crash.

The incident was also confirmed by Md Monjurul Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police. He stated that efforts were under way to collect the identities and addresses of the deceased.

The bodies of the victims were taken to the morgue of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for further procedures, including identification and post-mortem formalities where required.

Road accidents involving cargo vehicles and passenger transport remain a recurring safety concern in Bangladesh, particularly on regional highways where mixed traffic, heavy goods vehicles, and smaller passenger vehicles frequently share narrow routes. Early morning travel is also common for day labourers and construction workers heading to project sites in nearby districts.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the precise cause of the collision. Investigations are expected to determine whether factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, driver fatigue, or mechanical failure contributed to the accident.
