Police have arrested Nur Alam (56), described as a close associate of former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and an Awami League leader, during a late-night operation in Rangpur.
According to police information, the arrest took place on Monday at approximately 9:45 pm in the Mahiganj area of Rangpur city. Law enforcement officers conducted a coordinated sweep in the area, during which Nur Alam was taken into custody.
Nur Alam is the ousted chairman of the 1 No. Kalyani Union Parishad under Pirgacha Upazila. He also serves as the general secretary of the Kalyani Union unit of the Awami League. He is locally known as a close confidant of former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and has been referred to in the area as an “adopted son” of the political figure. Following the change in government, he had reportedly been in hiding.
Police stated that multiple cases have been filed against him in connection with alleged incidents during the anti-discrimination student movement, including charges of murder and attempted murder. Authorities have not provided further public detail regarding the specific incidents but confirmed the existence of “clearly identified cases” linked to the allegations.
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Mahiganj Metropolitan Police Station as part of what was described as a targeted enforcement operation. Following the arrest, legal procedures were initiated, and police confirmed that Nur Alam is scheduled to be produced before a court on Tuesday, 5 May.
