A murder suspect arrested in connection with the killing of a teenage auto-rickshaw driver in Lakshmipur has drawn unusual public attention after police brought his pet monkey to the station alongside him, prompting scenes of curiosity among onlookers.
Police in Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur district arrested the main accused, Gias Uddin, on Monday night from the Wireless area in Chandpur Sadar. He is accused in the killing of 14-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Md Rajib, a resident of the same upazila. Following his arrest, officers also brought along a pet monkey named “Raj,” which had reportedly been kept by the suspect.
The incident dates back to Friday night, when Rajib was allegedly murdered after being hired for transport work. According to police, the suspect had taken the teenager’s auto-rickshaw to a secluded area under the pretext of hiring it, where he is accused of attempting to steal the vehicle. When Rajib resisted, he was reportedly struck on the head with a hammer, resulting in his death.
Rajib’s body was discovered the following Saturday afternoon in a garden located west of the Camp Hat School area in Char Ababil Union. His father, Md Mostafa, filed a murder case that same night, naming Gias Uddin as the principal accused.
Law enforcement officials stated that during preliminary interrogation, Gias Uddin confessed to the killing. He allegedly admitted that after committing the crime, he left the victim’s body in the garden and later attempted to sell the stolen auto-rickshaw at Haydarganj Bazar. Failing to complete the sale, he abandoned the vehicle at a nearby house and fled the area.
Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Mia confirmed the sequence of events, adding that the suspect had been on the run since the incident before being arrested in Chandpur.
A notable and unusual aspect of the arrest was the presence of the suspect’s pet monkey. Police confirmed that the animal, named “Raj,” accompanied Gias Uddin when he fled his home after the incident. Officers later brought both the suspect and the monkey to the police station.
The monkey is currently in police custody and is expected to be handed over to the Forest Department for proper care and handling.
The presence of the animal at the station quickly drew public attention. As word spread, curious residents gathered at the police premises to catch a glimpse of the monkey. Inside the station, the animal reportedly moved around restlessly, creating minor difficulties for officers tasked with managing the situation.
