Police Ambushed, Suspect Freed in Rupganj

A dramatic incident unfolded in Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila after police officers came under violent attack during an arrest operation, resulting in the escape of a wanted suspect and injuries to several law enforcement personnel. Authorities have since detained 13 individuals, including the suspect’s wife, in follow-up raids.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday (4 May), around 2:30 a.m., in the Chanpara Rehabilitation Centre area, a locality long regarded by law enforcement as a crime-prone zone. The area has reportedly been associated with organised criminal activity, including murder, narcotics trafficking and illegal arms dealings.

According to police sources, the operation was led by Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam of Narayanganj district police, alongside the Officer-in-Charge of Rupganj Police Station, AHM Salauddin. The team arrested Shামীম Miah, a fugitive accused in multiple cases involving murder, drugs, weapons and attacks on law enforcement personnel. He was also subject to several outstanding arrest warrants.

However, the situation escalated rapidly after the suspect was handcuffed and placed inside a police vehicle. A group of his associates allegedly gathered at the scene, obstructed the operation and launched a coordinated attack on the officers. The attackers reportedly blocked the police vehicle, slashed the tyres of a pickup used in the operation, and physically assaulted officers in an attempt to free the detainee.

During the chaos, Shামীম Miah was forcibly taken away by the assailants. Several police officers sustained injuries in the confrontation. Additional law enforcement units were quickly deployed to the area, bringing the situation under control and rescuing the trapped officers.

A subsequent series of raids was conducted in the locality, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals, including Shামীম’s wife, Sathi Akhtar. Police confirmed that all detainees have been taken into custody for interrogation and will be produced before the court.
