The historical pursuit of “the next Pelé” or “the next Maradona” has long defined football scouting. In recent decades, that focus shifted toward identifying successors to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, the global search has evolved to find the heir to Erling Haaland’s physical dominance. At FC Barcelona’s famed youth academy, La Masia, attention has turned to 18-year-old Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkrim, who has already earned the moniker the “Egyptian Haaland” due to his imposing stature and clinical finishing.
Hamza’s reputation reached new heights following a dominant performance for Barcelona’s Under-19 (Juvenil A) side in the Spanish Youth Honor Division. During a 9–0 victory over Monte Carlo, the young Egyptian demonstrated exceptional aerial prowess by scoring a hat-trick, with all three goals coming from headers.
Standing at 6 feet 1 inch, Hamza possesses a physical profile that distinguishes him from the typical La Masia graduate. While he is naturally left-footed, his ability to dominate defenders in the air has drawn direct comparisons to Norway’s Erling Haaland. To date, all four of his goals for the youth side have been scored via headers, showcasing a specialised efficiency inside the penalty area.
Hamza joined Barcelona on 1 February this year on a loan agreement from the Egyptian club Al Ahly. His integration into the squad was initially hampered by administrative delays and subsequent injury setbacks. However, since returning to full fitness, he has become a pivotal figure in the Under-19 setup.
The loan agreement includes a purchase option, allowing Barcelona to secure his services permanently at the end of the season for a fee of €2 million.

With Barcelona’s Under-19s having already secured the league title, the focus shifts to the Champions Cup. This tournament, beginning at the quarter-final stage, will serve as a critical evaluation period for Hamza. His performance in these high-stakes knockout fixtures—including the two-legged quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final—will likely determine if the club triggers his permanent transfer.
Beyond the youth level, there is a strategic need for a classic “Number 9” in the senior team. As Robert Lewandowski approaches the final stages of his career and contract, club officials are actively monitoring internal talent to fill the eventual void. Hamza’s profile as a traditional striker who excels at holding up the ball and finishing within the box makes him a significant prospect for the future.
Despite widespread media reports regarding the activation of his buy-out clause, the club remains cautious. Pau Campanya, the media spokesperson for La Masia, addressed the situation during an appearance on the Egyptian programme Modern Sports. He clarified that no official announcement has been made regarding a permanent deal.
“If there is an announcement to be made, it will be communicated officially,” Campanya stated. He noted that while discussions regarding Hamza’s future are scheduled for the coming days, the club is currently prioritising league title celebrations and preparations for upcoming competitions. Decisions regarding the €2 million permanent transfer are expected to be finalised before the conclusion of the current youth season.
