Police in the capital’s Mugda area recovered a severed head several hours after finding seven dismembered body parts, intensifying an ongoing investigation into what officers believe to be a grisly homicide.
The latest discovery was made at approximately 2:30am on Monday in the Maniknagar area, where officers located the head wrapped in black polythene and discarded in a narrow vacant space between two residential buildings near the main paved road.
The development follows an earlier recovery on Sunday afternoon, when police found seven separate parts of a human body in the same general area. The sequence of discoveries has raised concerns among local residents and prompted an expanded police operation to search surrounding streets, drains and empty plots for further evidence.
Sub-Inspector Abu Raihan of Mugda Police Station confirmed the recovery of the head and said officers had continued their search after the initial discovery of the body parts.
According to police, the severed head has been sent to the morgue at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination following completion of the required legal procedures. Forensic specialists are expected to examine the remains to determine the cause of death, approximate time of death, and whether the victim suffered injuries prior to dismemberment.
Investigators have so far been unable to identify the deceased. No official estimate regarding the victim’s age or gender has yet been publicly disclosed.
To assist with identification, police have requested support from the forensic department for DNA sample collection and profiling. Authorities said the DNA analysis may help match the remains with any missing persons reports filed in recent days or weeks.
Officials are also reviewing nearby CCTV footage and gathering information from residents in the Maniknagar and Mugda areas to establish how and when the body parts were transported and dumped.
Cases involving dismembered bodies are typically treated as homicide investigations, with forensic evidence playing a central role in reconstructing the crime timeline. Police often rely on DNA, fingerprints, clothing fragments, surveillance footage and mobile phone data to trace both the victim and potential suspects.
