The Bangladesh Police have apprehended a 35-year-old man, identified as Alam Gazi, on charges of attempted rape and physical assault of a three-year-old girl in Sharsha Upazila, Jashore. The arrest took place on Friday night, 22 May, in Sarupdah village. The suspect is confirmed to be the son of Johur Gazi, a resident of the same locality.
According to official police reports and statements from the victim’s family, the incident transpired on Friday morning. The accused allegedly approached the child and lured her away with the promise of snacks (locally known as kati-bhaja). Under this pretext, the suspect took the minor to a room adjacent to his residence.
Once inside, the suspect allegedly attempted to sexually assault the child. During the ordeal, the victim sustained multiple physical injuries, including bite marks on various parts of her body. The child’s screams alerted passersby and local residents who rushed toward the scene. Realising that he was about to be caught, Alam Gazi fled the premises before the witnesses could intercept him.
Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a formal written complaint at the Sharsha Police Station. Acting on the gravity of the allegations, a police team conducted a raid in Sarupdah village later that night, successfully taking the suspect into custody.
Maruf Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sharsha Police Station, confirmed that a case has been registered under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. This legislation is the primary legal framework in Bangladesh for prosecuting offences related to violence against women and minors.
The authorities have outlined the current status of the investigation as follows:

The Officer-in-Charge further noted that the victim is being processed for a formal medical examination (forensic test) to document the extent of the physical injuries and collect biological evidence. This procedure is a mandatory requirement under Bangladeshi law to substantiate charges in cases of sexual assault and physical repression.
The police have assured the public that the investigation is being handled with due diligence. Once the forensic reports are obtained and witness statements are formally recorded, the suspect will be produced before the court to face judicial proceedings. The authorities remain committed to following the standard legal protocols to ensure a thorough investigation into the assault.
