A 70-year-old agricultural labourer has died following an altercation allegedly triggered by a dispute over soil excavation in front of his home in Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur district.
The incident took place on Sunday morning in the Patowarir Pul area of Gachhirhat village under Charpata Union. The deceased, Hanif Mia, was a resident of the village and the son of the late Habib Ullah.
According to police and local residents, Hanif Mia had been digging soil in front of his dwelling house when a verbal disagreement arose with Abdul Barek, 60, who lived in the same household compound. Witnesses said the exchange quickly escalated into a physical confrontation involving pushing, punching and scuffling between the two men.
During the altercation, Hanif Mia reportedly collapsed to the ground. Family members and neighbours immediately rushed to assist him and transported him to Raipur Government Hospital for treatment. However, the attending physician, Dr Saiful Islam, declared him dead shortly after his arrival.
The death has caused concern among residents of the area, particularly because the dispute appears to have stemmed from a relatively minor disagreement. Local sources indicated that there had been no known land ownership dispute between the parties prior to the incident, although police are examining whether any underlying family or personal tensions may have contributed to the confrontation.
