The number of child deaths associated with measles and its symptoms in the country has risen to 585, according to the latest update from the Directorate General of Health Services. The figures reflect a continuing public health concern as infections and suspected cases remain widespread across multiple regions.
In the most recent 24-hour reporting period (from 8:00 am Saturday to 8:00 am Sunday), two more children lost their lives—one in Dhaka and another in Barishal. During the same period, 1,377 children were recorded as affected by measles or measles-like symptoms. Among them, 53 cases were confirmed as measles infections, while the remaining 1,324 were classified as suspected cases showing related symptoms.
Health authorities report that since 15 March, a total of 495 children have died after developing measles symptoms. In addition, 90 children have died following laboratory-confirmed measles infections during the same period, bringing the combined death toll to 585.
The broader surveillance data shows a significant burden on the healthcare system. Since 15 March, a total of 70,936 children have presented with measles-related symptoms. Of these, 56,886 children required hospital admission for treatment and monitoring. Encouragingly, 52,841 children have recovered and been discharged from hospital care. During this period, 9,049 children have been confirmed as having measles through diagnostic testing.
Public health specialists note that the high number of symptomatic cases compared to confirmed infections highlights the challenges of early diagnosis and reporting during outbreaks, particularly in densely populated areas and districts with limited healthcare access. Hospitals have been under sustained pressure, with paediatric wards reporting increased admissions linked to fever, rash, respiratory complications, and dehydration—common manifestations associated with measles.
The data also indicates a clear distinction between deaths attributed to symptomatic cases and those confirmed through laboratory testing, underscoring the complexity of tracking disease outcomes during active transmission periods.
