State Seeks Maximum Sentence Assurance

The government has reaffirmed its firm commitment to securing the highest possible punishment for the accused in the widely discussed child murder case in the Pallabi area, according to the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister. He stated that the evidence presented so far in court is sufficiently strong to support the expectation of the maximum penalty under existing law.

The Minister made these remarks on Sunday morning while attending a programme held at the auditorium of Shailkupa Upazila Parishad in Jhenaidah. The event was organised by the Jhenaidah District Council and included the distribution of footballs alongside financial assistance cheques. The initiative was aimed at promoting local sports development and supporting community welfare activities.

Addressing the gathering as chief guest, the Minister also spoke on broader constitutional and governance issues. He noted that a proposal had been made to include five members from the opposition in the committee tasked with constitutional amendments. According to him, the concerned parties have already been informed and the government is now awaiting their final decision. He expressed optimism that participation from all sides would make the constitutional reform process more inclusive, transparent, and effective.

Highlighting ongoing development programmes, he said that the government is working towards issuing family cards to approximately 40 million households across the country. This initiative is intended to expand the scope of social safety net programmes and ensure wider access to state support. In addition, the rollout of farmer cards is being implemented in phases nationwide to strengthen the agricultural sector, enabling farmers to receive financial assistance and government services more efficiently.

The Minister further mentioned that the government is also considering introducing allowances for religious leaders, including imams of mosques and priests of temples, as part of its broader social welfare framework. He emphasised that such measures would contribute to recognising their societal contributions and improving their economic stability.

The programme was presided over by the administrator of the District Council. The District Commissioner and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer attended as special guests. Local political leaders, administrative officials, and representatives of law enforcement agencies were also present at the event.

Participants at the programme described the distribution of sports equipment and financial assistance as a constructive initiative at the local level. They observed that such activities not only encourage young people to engage in sports but also contribute to strengthening social cohesion and community development.
