Three workers were severely injured following a sudden explosion at a steel manufacturing facility in Dhaka’s Demra area, where molten iron splashed onto them during routine smelting operations.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30am on Sunday at Zahir Steel Mill, located in the Bansherpool area of Demra. According to workers present at the site, the explosion took place while iron was being melted in a furnace, causing a rapid release of molten metal that scattered across the workspace and struck nearby labourers.
The injured workers were identified as Sabbir Hossain (28), Tofazzal Hossain (48), and Majed Hossain (52). Sabbir and Majed are originally from Rangpur, while Tofazzal hails from Rajbari. All three were residing in rented accommodation in Demra due to their employment at the factory.
Following the incident, colleagues quickly transported the injured men to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. One of the co-workers, Alamin Hossain, stated that the explosion occurred without warning during furnace operations, leaving no time for the workers to escape the immediate vicinity of the molten splash.
Medical officials confirmed that Sabbir and Tofazzal sustained serious burn injuries and were admitted for intensive treatment, while Majed received comparatively minor injuries and was discharged after initial first aid.
Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the burn institute, reported that Sabbir suffered burns to approximately 35 per cent of his body, Tofazzal to around 23 per cent, and Majed to about 1 per cent. He added that the condition of the two hospitalised patients remains under close observation, with treatment continuing in the specialised burn unit.
Industrial incidents involving molten metal are considered highly hazardous due to the extreme temperatures involved and the potential for rapid, life-threatening injuries. Investigations into the exact cause of the explosion have not yet been formally disclosed, and no official statement regarding safety compliance at the facility has been issued at this stage.

The incident has once again highlighted occupational risks in metal processing industries, particularly in small and medium-scale foundries where high-temperature furnace operations are conducted. Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the blast as treatment continues for the injured workers.
