The primary accused, Sohel Rana, and his wife, Swapna, have been transported from prison to the court premises ahead of their formal charge-framing hearing. The duo face charges related to the rape and dismemberment of an eight-year-old child in the Pallabi locality of Dhaka.
The defendants reached the court complex inside a secure prison van at approximately 07:45 BST on Monday, 1 June 2026. Upon arrival, judicial authorities placed Sohel Rana into the lock-up facility of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, whilst Swapna was escorted to the designated female detention area.
The indictment hearing is scheduled to take place before the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal. Ripon Molla, the court in-charge of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, verified the arrival of both individuals, noting that they would be presented before the tribunal immediately upon receiving the magistrate’s directive.
The criminal case was initiated following the discovery of the victim’s mutilated remains inside a third-floor apartment in Pallabi at roughly 11:30 BST on 19 May 2026. The principal suspect, Sohel Rana, initially managed to evade the police by breaking through the window grilles of the apartment’s bathroom. Although he escaped the flat, law enforcement officers detained his wife, Swapna, at the scene. Sohel Rana was subsequently apprehended by police personnel later that evening in Fatullah, Narayanganj.
The father of the deceased child lodged a formal complaint at the Pallabi Police Station on 20 May 2026. On the afternoon of the same day, Sohel Rana was brought before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid, where he recorded a statutory confession acknowledging both the assault and the homicide. Following a rapid investigation, the police department submitted the official charge sheet on 25 May 2026, just five days after the case was registered.
