Government Enacts Fresh Fuel Price Hikes Across Bangladesh

The government of Bangladesh has implemented a fresh round of upward tariff adjustments for retail petroleum products, effective from Monday, 1 June 2026. Under the new pricing directive announced for the current calendar month, the retail procurement rates for octane, petrol, and kerosene have each been raised by BDT 5 per litre. Meanwhile, the price of diesel remains unchanged.

Administrative Notification and the Automated Tariff System

The newly adjusted retail rates were formally introduced via an official press release issued on Sunday night, 31 May 2026, by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. According to the executive ministry, the domestic price restructuring was executed to maintain structural alignment with the volatile rise and fall of crude oil prices across the global international petroleum market.

These monthly adjustments are legally mandated under the state’s automated fuel pricing formula. This system dynamically correlates local consumer costs against global import variables, processing fees, customs duties, and foreign exchange rates. Under the freshly enacted pricing model, the consumer cost for diesel has been fixed at BDT 115 per litre, octane at BDT 145 per litre, petrol at BDT 140 per litre, and kerosene at BDT 135 per litre.

Statistical Analysis of Historical Retail Price Progression

This fiscal intervention follows an earlier, substantial round of price hikes implemented by the government on 18 April. During that previous restructuring phase, the retail price of diesel was raised from BDT 100 to BDT 115 per litre. Concurrently, octane was increased from BDT 120 to BDT 140 per litre, petrol ascended from BDT 116 to BDT 135 per litre, and kerosene moved from BDT 112 to BDT 130 per litre.

Comparative Chronology of Domestic Fuel Prices

The final retail consumer ceilings listed above incorporate standard value-added tax (VAT), import tariffs, distribution overheads, and dealer commissions. While diesel prices were held flat to shield the public transport and agricultural sectors from immediate economic shocks, consumer categories utilizing petrol, octane, and kerosene must absorb the additional cost immediately.
