A Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal political worker was cornered and detained by local residents in Patiya Upazila, Chittagong, after being discovered in an allegedly compromising situation at the residence of an expatriate’s wife. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon, 31 May 2026, in Ward 1 of the Kolagaon Union.
Video recordings of the altercation were subsequently uploaded and widely circulated across social media platforms, generating substantial local controversy and triggering a political dispute within the municipality.
The individual at the centre of the scandal has been identified as 37-year-old Mizanur Rahman Kafil, a resident of Kolagaon Union and the son of the late Solaiman, a former Union Parishad member. Local villagers alleged that Kafil had maintained an undocumented extramarital relationship with the expatriate’s wife over a significant duration.
When Kafil arrived at the property on Sunday afternoon, a group of neighbours intercepted and interrogated him regarding his presence. Video footage secured by the press reveals a highly charged environment, with several members of the public physically manhandling Kafil.
The viral video depicts a group of men dragging Kafil through the street while a crowd gathers. In a separate sequence within the footage, the woman involved is seen boarding a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw to vacate the area.
To prevent further public disorder, local elders, family members, and community dignitaries rapidly convened a traditional arbitration tribunal (salish). Kafil was held under community detention for approximately three hours and was ultimately released after signing a formal written undertaking (muchleka).
Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, a former local Union Parishad member who arrived at the scene during the disturbance, confirmed the timeline:
“We moved to the location immediately upon learning of the public unrest. The regional atmosphere was exceptionally volatile. Fortunately, through the direct mediation of senior community members, the situation was stabilized and resolved peacefully.”
Mizanur Rahman Kafil has completely rejected the allegations of an extramarital affair, claiming that the entire episode was a targeted conspiracy. He argued that local political adversaries manufactured the scenario to destroy his standing, stating that his visit was strictly intended to settle a monetary transaction at a relative’s house.
Despite his defense, a faction within the Patiya Upazila Jubo Dal—the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—has demanded formal disciplinary sanctions. Wahidul Alam Chowdhury Pibul, the former Member Secretary of the Patiya Upazila Jubo Dal, clarified that while Kafil is a known party worker, he holds no organizational rank. He confirmed that senior leaders are probing the allegations and will issue penalties if the facts are verified.
Concurrently, the police department has confirmed that no criminal investigation is underway. Mohammad Ziaul Haque, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station, stated that no written or verbal complaints had been submitted regarding the Kolagaon Union incident, noting that law enforcement cannot act until a statutory report is filed.
