Non-Performing Loans Rise In Bangladesh Banking Sector

The volume of non-performing loans (NPLs) within the banking sector of Bangladesh expanded by an additional 31,487 crore taka during the opening quarter of the current fiscal year. Financial statistics released by the central bank indicate that default loans witnessed an upward trajectory between the conclusion of December 2025 and the termination of March 2026, underlining persistent asset quality challenges across the sovereign financial system.

Macroeconomic Aggregate Disclosures And Proportionate Breakdown

According to the latest statistical bulletin compiled and published by Bangladesh Bank, the cumulative outstanding loans and advances disbursed by the country’s 61 scheduled commercial banks reached approximately 18,24,668 crore taka as of 31 March 2026. Out of this comprehensive credit portfolio, classified or defaulted loans accounted for a staggering 5,88,704 crore taka.

This aggregate figure establishes that non-performing assets now constitute 32.26 per cent of the total banking credit in the economy. This marks a sharp expansion from the preceding quarter ending 31 December 2025, when the total quantum of unrecovered default loans stood at 5,57,217 crore taka. Within this three-month window, the macro-ratio of bad loans relative to total assets escalated by 1.66 percentage points, rising from the 30.60 per cent benchmark recorded at the tail end of December 2025.

Institutional Analysis Across Banking Classifications

An analytical decomposition of the central bank’s data reveals distinct operational vulnerabilities across different ownership structures in the domestic banking hierarchy. State-Owned Commercial Banks (SCBs) continue to exhibit the highest concentration of toxic debt relative to their operational scale. The aggregate default loans within public-sector banks climbed to 1,49,784 crore taka, representing 45.85 per cent of their specific combined loan books.

Concurrently, Private Commercial Banks (PCBs) generated the largest absolute volume of non-performing loans owing to their dominant market share in credit dispensation. Defaulted assets within private-sector institutions reached 4,16,481 crore taka, which translates into 30.11 per cent of their cumulative outstanding disbursements.

Foreign Commercial Banks (FCBs) operating within the national boundaries maintained significantly stronger credit risk management protocols, reporting an aggregate default volume of 3,262 crore taka, equivalent to 4.82 per cent of their total allocated credit. Lastly, Specialised Banks (SBs), structured primarily to finance targeted developmental sectors like agriculture, recorded non-performing loans totalling 19,174 crore taka, reflecting a default ratio of 40.72 per cent against their total credit portfolio.

Implications For The National Financial Infrastructure

The continuous escalation of the default loan trajectory is being classified by Bangladesh Bank as a critical source of institutional concern for the stability of the national financial infrastructure. The compounding accumulation of toxic assets impairs the profitability of scheduled banks, diminishes liquidity cushions, and forces institutions to tie up significant capital in mandatory provisioning.

Central bank officials note that this systemic lock-up of capital diminishes the capacity of commercial lenders to extend fresh credit lines to productive sectors of the economy, driving up borrowing costs. The regulatory authority continues to monitor the worsening asset indicators to determine if additional macroeconomic interventions or stricter judicial debt-recovery frameworks are required to stabilise the balance sheets of the affected financial institutions.
