Bangladesh Reach Third Consecutive SAFF Women’s Championship Final

Bangladesh secured a place in the final of the SAFF Women’s Championship for the third consecutive time after defeating Nepal 2-1 in a closely contested semi-final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa. The victory keeps Bangladesh’s hopes of winning another regional title alive and underlines the team’s consistency at the highest level of South Asian women’s football.

The match began in difficult fashion for Bangladesh, whose performance in the opening stages lacked rhythm and cohesion. Nepal started brightly and adopted an attacking approach from the outset, dominating possession and creating the more dangerous opportunities. Bangladesh spent much of the first half on the defensive as Nepal continued to press forward in search of an opening goal.

Nepal’s positive start was rewarded in the 23rd minute. A corner delivered by Deepa Shahi found Gita Rana inside the penalty area, and she guided the ball into the net with a precise touch to give Nepal a 1-0 lead. The goal increased the pressure on Bangladesh and forced coach Peter Butler’s side to search for a response.

For much of the remainder of the first half, Bangladesh struggled to establish control of the game. Nepal continued to look threatening whenever they advanced, while the Bangladeshi defence was required to remain alert. However, just when it appeared Nepal would take their advantage into the interval, Bangladesh found a crucial equaliser.

In stoppage time at the end of the first half, Rituparna Chakma produced a moment of quality from a corner kick. Her delivery travelled directly into the net, resulting in an Olympic goal and bringing Bangladesh level at 1-1. The strike changed the complexion of the match and provided Bangladesh with renewed confidence heading into the second half.

Nepal resumed the second period with the same attacking intent that had characterised their first-half display. Bangladesh survived a major scare when Rekha dribbled past the goalkeeper and attempted to restore Nepal’s lead. However, her effort struck the post and bounced away, allowing Bangladesh to remain level.

As the match progressed, both sides created opportunities but neither was able to find the decisive breakthrough. Nepal came close again in the 69th minute when Saru Limbu’s curling effort narrowly missed the target. At the other end, Bangladesh goalkeeper Mili made several important saves to keep her team in contention and prevent Nepal from regaining the advantage.

Bangladesh also had opportunities of their own. In the 78th minute, Sagarika was presented with an excellent chance after receiving a pass from Shamsunnahar Junior. Her close-range effort appeared destined for the net, but Nepal’s goalkeeper reacted well and punched the ball away. At that stage, the match remained finely balanced and either side could have emerged victorious.

With the score still locked at 1-1 after the completion of the regulation 90 minutes, the contest moved into six minutes of added time. As the match approached its conclusion, Bangladesh produced the decisive moment.

In the closing stages of stoppage time, Sagarika finished off a well-worked move to score the winning goal. The strike completed Bangladesh’s comeback and secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Nepal.

The result sends Bangladesh into the final of the SAFF Women’s Championship for the third tournament in succession. After recovering from an early setback and demonstrating resilience throughout a challenging encounter, the team led by players such as Rituparna Chakma, Afida Khandaker and Sagarika has moved one step closer to another regional title.

Bangladesh’s ability to respond after falling behind, combined with key contributions from both attackers and defenders, proved decisive in a match that remained competitive until the final moments. Their victory ends Nepal’s campaign and ensures that Bangladesh will once again compete for the championship trophy in the tournament’s final.
