Two Children Killed in Road Collision

A tragic head-on collision between a truck and a microbus in Bangladesh’s Natore district has claimed the lives of two young children and left three others injured, prompting renewed concern over road safety on regional highways.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm on Thursday along the Bonpara–Hatikumrul highway near the Royna petrol pump in Baraigram upazila. According to police, a private microbus travelling from Rajshahi to Dhaka collided head-on with a mango-laden pickup truck coming from the opposite direction.

The microbus was carrying a family of five, including engineer Akib Hossain, his wife, their two children, and his mother. The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged and trapping several occupants inside before rescue teams arrived.

Police confirmed that four-month-old infant Ijaz died instantly at the scene due to critical injuries sustained in the crash. Emergency responders from the Fire Service later extricated the injured passengers and transported them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Despite medical efforts, the condition of the victims remained critical. Four-year-old Ehan, who had initially survived the crash, succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital.

The injured survivors have been identified as Akib Hossain, his wife Annie, and his mother Kona. All three are currently receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors describe their condition as serious but stable under close observation.

Law enforcement officials have since taken both the damaged truck and microbus into police custody for further investigation. Authorities stated that legal proceedings are underway to determine the exact cause of the collision, including whether speeding, reckless driving, or lane discipline violations played a role.

A senior officer from Bonpara Highway Police noted that the stretch of road where the accident occurred has previously witnessed multiple serious collisions, often attributed to heavy traffic flow and risky overtaking manoeuvres.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of passengers on Bangladesh’s highways, particularly family travellers in smaller vehicles sharing roads with heavy transport. Authorities are expected to intensify monitoring and enforcement measures along the route in response to the tragedy.
