Bangladeshi Dies in Delhi Hotel Blaze

A trip to India for a life-saving kidney transplant has ended in tragedy for a family from Bangladesh, after a devastating hotel fire in New Delhi claimed the life of a 44-year-old businessman and left four of his relatives critically injured.

The victim, Nurul Amin, was a resident of Sangishwar village in Chiora Union under Chauddagram Upazila of Cumilla District. A father of one son and two daughters, he had travelled to India with members of his family to support the treatment of his brother-in-law, Mosharaf Hossain, whose kidneys had reportedly failed and who was preparing to undergo a transplant procedure.

According to family members, Nurul Amin and four relatives flew from Dhaka to New Delhi on 2 June following medical advice that a kidney transplant was necessary. Treatment preparations were underway at a private hospital in the Indian capital, while the family stayed at a hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a fire broke out at the Flourish Stay Hotel, also known as Micasa Inn. Reports indicate that the blaze began at approximately 8:30 a.m. and spread rapidly through the building, causing panic among guests. Several occupants became trapped as flames and smoke engulfed multiple floors.

At the time of the fire, Nurul Amin had reportedly gone downstairs to the restaurant area for breakfast, while other family members remained in their rooms. He suffered severe burn injuries and was rushed to hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday while receiving treatment.

Four other members of the family were also seriously injured in the blaze. They include Mosharaf Hossain, Nurul Amin’s elder sister Rehana Akter, his cousin Umme Johora, who had travelled as a potential kidney donor, and Johora’s daughter, Umme Jaima. All four remain under intensive care and are reported to be in critical condition.

Family member Mohammad Bacchu Mia said that the medical trip had been progressing as planned until the fire broke out unexpectedly. He expressed deep concern over the condition of the surviving relatives, particularly Nurul Amin’s sister and brother-in-law.

Nurul Amin was known as the proprietor of “Amin and Brothers”, a food products manufacturing business based in Chattogram. News of his death has prompted widespread grief in his home village, where relatives, neighbours and community members have called for the swift repatriation of his body.

Local authorities in Bangladesh have begun coordinating efforts to assist the family. Chauddagram Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahadat Hossain confirmed that the administration is attempting to maintain contact with the affected family and will facilitate the return of the deceased’s remains through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Officials are also monitoring the treatment of the injured relatives.

The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has stated that it is working to expedite the necessary procedures for sending the body back to Bangladesh. According to the mission, two Bangladeshi families affected by the fire had travelled to Delhi for medical treatment.
