A teenage boy has died after being electrocuted while attempting to remove a dove chick from an electricity pole in Rajshahi city, according to police and fire service officials. The incident took place during the morning hours on Saturday (6 June) and involved a high-voltage electrical installation in a busy urban area.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 am near the eastern side of a flyover in front of the Terokhadia Divisional Stadium area of Rajshahi. The location is within a populated section of the city where electrical infrastructure runs alongside public roads and structures.
The deceased was identified as Sazzad, aged 14, son of Saju from Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha district. At the time of the incident, he was residing with his family in a rented accommodation in the Greater Road area under Rajpara Police Station jurisdiction, behind Bandh Gate Mosque.
According to Rajpara Police Station, Sazzad climbed a high-voltage electricity pole in the Terokhadia Stadium area during the morning. While attempting to retrieve a dove chick from a nest located on the structure, he came into contact with live electrical wires. This resulted in him being electrocuted and left stranded on the pole.
Fire Service officials stated that they were informed of the incident at around 10:45 am. Following the alert, personnel from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, working in coordination with the electricity distribution authority, reached the scene. They carried out a rescue operation to bring the teenager down from the pole before transferring him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital by emergency means.
Doctors at the emergency department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital examined Sazzad and declared him dead at approximately 11:30 am. Hospital authorities confirmed that he succumbed to electrocution injuries despite immediate transfer for medical attention.
Police further confirmed that the body was subsequently placed in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination and completion of necessary legal formalities. Once procedural requirements are fulfilled, the remains are expected to be released to the family.
