Three individuals have been arrested by the police in the Shibalaya Upazila of Manikganj district following allegations of a gang assault on an elderly female beggar. The suspects are also accused of stealing a silver chain worn by the victim. Following information provided by the detainees during interrogation, the police successfully recovered the missing item.
The arrests were made on Friday, 5 June 2026, after the sexagenarian victim lodged a formal written complaint at the Shibalaya Police Station. Two of the suspects were apprehended on charges of assault, whilst the third was detained for knowingly purchasing stolen property.
According to official case documents and police reports, the victim, who survives by begging, was engaged in her routine activities at a local market on the afternoon of 30 May. Two individuals, identified as Ashraful, aged 26, and Robin, alias Sohel Rana, aged 27, both residents of the Dakshin Teota area, approached her. They told the victim that Robin’s mother had invited her to their residence to give her some charitable donations.
Believing their statement, the victim boarded a local three-wheeled easy-bike with the two men. The formal complaint notes that upon reaching a bamboo grove owned by an individual named Taiyob in the Dakshin Teota area, the two men forced the victim inside the plantation.
Inside the bamboo grove, the men physically assaulted and intimidated the victim before repeatedly violating her. During the encounter, Ashraful managed to snatch a silver chain, weighing approximately 1 Bhori and 14 Annas, from the victim’s neck. The perpetrators subsequently threatened to murder the victim if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
After escaping, the victim informed her relatives of the ordeal. On Friday afternoon, with the assistance of local residents, Ashraful and Robin were detained in the Shaitghar Bazar area. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene shortly after being notified and took the suspects into formal police custody.
During preliminary questioning, the suspects confessed to selling the stolen silver chain to Nitai Chandra Pal, a 45-year-old goldsmith operating in the Teota Bazar. Acting on this confession, the police conducted a raid, arrested Nitai Chandra Pal, and recovered the stolen jewellery from his possession.
