A tragic road accident in Madhukhali claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman who was travelling to her ancestral home after receiving news of her mother’s death. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday (7 June), around 6:00 a.m., on the Dhaka–Khulna Highway in the Gondardia area near the Maleka Eye Hospital.
The deceased, Reshma Begum, wife of Abdur Sattar Gazi from Komorpur village under Debhata police station in Satkhira district, was travelling from Gazipur towards Satkhira. She had reportedly set out in a private car accompanied by her husband and five-year-old daughter after learning of her mother’s death.
According to police and local sources, the vehicle was heading towards Satkhira when the driver lost control upon reaching the Gondardia stretch in Madhukhali. The car then veered off the road and crashed violently into the boundary wall of Maleka Eye Hospital. The impact left Reshma Begum critically injured, while other passengers also sustained injuries.
Fire service personnel from Madhukhali rushed to the scene shortly after receiving the alert. They rescued the injured passengers and transported them to Madhukhali Upazila Health Complex, where attending doctors declared Reshma Begum dead on arrival. Her husband and young daughter received primary medical treatment for their injuries.
Karimpur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Johurul Islam confirmed the incident and stated that the private car involved in the crash had been recovered and taken into police custody for investigation. However, the driver fled the scene immediately after the accident and has not yet been apprehended.
Sub-Inspector Sazzad of Karimpur Highway Police added that, following a request from the victim’s family, the body of Reshma Begum was handed over to her relatives without delay. Legal procedures concerning the case are currently underway, and further investigation is in progress to determine the exact cause of the accident, including possible negligence or mechanical failure.
Authorities have noted that this section of the highway has witnessed several accidents in recent years, often attributed to speeding and loss of vehicle control, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and driver alertness may be reduced.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the family, who were already mourning the loss of a loved one, turning a journey of sorrow into an even deeper tragedy.
